ipanema café

917 W Grace St, Richmond, VA 23220, USA

Ipanema carves out a unique niche here in Richmond, being completely vegan and vegetarian. The restaurant opened in 1998 and was taken over by 24-year-old Seth Campbell on Jan. 1, 2020. Seth maintains an open and accepting environment, encouraging even the most committed meat-lovers to come in and try something new. He wants to change public perception, and make it known that vegetarian dishes can be extremely flavorful, creative and satisfying. Ipanema is located inside a historic building on the edge of the VCU campus, which brings an energy to the restaurant that feels young, fresh and full of possibilities.

Seth Campbell

Seth fell in love with the service industry in a rather nontraditional way, as a 19-year-old bouncer at Charlottesville’s college bars. One day, he decided to take a leap of faith and pray that the stars would align. They did. At 24-years-old, he now owns and operates his own restaurant, Ipanema.

“Ipanema is a really open, welcoming place. Not only for people of different beliefs and identities, but it’s vegan fare—and that’s still relatively new.”

You’re only 24 and own your own restaurant. Can you talk about the journey that got you here?
